QR Codes become more and more important. In some areas they have even replaced the traditional barcode. A QR Code is able to store up to seven thousand characters and therefore is qualified for more complex content, e.g. vCards. Hence nowadays QR Codes can nowadays be found on nearly every advertisement poster and animate the user to scan it with his smartphone. Thus, it is no longer necessary take a hand written note, it is enough to scan the QR Code. Correspondingly, there are already many QR Code scanner apps available in the Google Play Store. It belongs to the Privacy Friendly Apps group developed by the research group SECUSO at Technische Universität Darmstadt. More information can be found an secuso.org/pfa

Our Privacy Friendly QR Scanner App differs with respect to two aspects:

1. The Privacy Friendly QR Scanner App only requires the minimum amount of permissions, namely:
Most of the QR Code scanner apps available in the Google Play Store need several permissions on top of the ones needed: e.g. reading contacts or your call log and retrieving data from the Internet. Most of these requirements are not necessary for the functionality they actually are supposed to provide.

2. The Privacy Friendly QR Scanner App supports its users in detecting malicious links: QR Codes provide new possibilities for an attacker, as QR Codes can contain malicious links, i.e. links to phishing webpages or webpages from which malware would automatically be downloaded. Therefore it is important to carefully check the link before accessing the corresponding webpage. Since it is difficult for the user to spot malicious links, the Privacy friendly QR Scanner App supports the user by highlighting the domain (e.g. in that case for https://www.secuso.org, secuso.org would be highlighted). To avoid not checking the link and in particular the highlighted domain carefully, the app provides information about possible fraud and its users need to confirm that they checked the link and it is trustworthy. Note, the information shown after scanning an URL based QR Code is not customized for every URL. Hence, it should be considered as an advice for the user how to behave in general.

The Privacy Friendly QR Scanner App supports most of the usual qr code types. Bar codes and other widely used codes are also supported.

Bu nedenle günümüzde karekodlar neredeyse her reklam afişinde bulunabilmekte ve kullanıcının akıllı telefonuyla taramasını sağlamaktadır. Böylece artık elle yazılmış bir not almaya gerek kalmıyor, sadece karekodu taramak yeterli oluyor. Buna paralel olarak, Google Play Mağazası'nda halihazırda birçok karekod tarayıcı uygulaması mevcut. Gizlilik Dostu Karekod Tarayıcı uygulamamız iki açıdan farklılık göstermektedir:

1. Gizlilik Dostu Karekod Tarayıcı Uygulaması yalnızca minimum miktarda izin gerektirir:
Google Play Mağazası'nda bulunan karekod tarayıcı uygulamalarının çoğu, gerekli olanlara ek olarak çeşitli izinlere ihtiyaç duyar: örneğin kişileri veya arama kaydınızı okumak ve internetten veri almak gibi. Bu gereksinimlerin çoğu, aslında sağlamaları gereken işlevsellik için gerekli değildir.

2. Gizlilik Dostu Karekod Tarayıcı Uygulaması, kullanıcılarını kötü amaçlı bağlantıları tespit etmede destekler: Karekodlar, kötü amaçlı bağlantılar, yani kimlik avı web sayfalarına veya kötü amaçlı yazılımların otomatik olarak indirileceği web sayfalarına bağlantılar içerebileceğinden, karekodlar bir saldırgan için yeni olanaklar sağlar. Bu nedenle, ilgili web sayfasına erişmeden önce bağlantıyı dikkatlice kontrol etmek önemlidir. Kullanıcının kötü amaçlı bağlantıları tespit etmesi zor olduğundan, Gizlilik dostu Karekod Tarayıcı Uygulaması etki alanını vurgulayarak kullanıcıyı destekler (örneğin, bu durumda https://www.secuso.org için secuso.org vurgulanır). Kody QR stają się coraz ważniejsze. W niektórych obszarach zastąpiły nawet tradycyjny kod kreskowy. Kod QR jest w stanie zapisać do siedmiu tysięcy znaków i dlatego nadaje się do bardziej skomplikowanych treści, np.: vCards. Stąd kody QR można znaleźć obecnie na prawie każdym plakacie reklamowym i zachęcają użytkownika do zeskanowania go smartfonem. Dzięki temu nie trzeba już sporządzać odręcznej notatki, wystarczy zeskanować kod QR. Z tego powodu w sklepie Google Play dostępnych jest już wiele aplikacji do skanowania kodów QR.

Nasza przyjazna dla prywatności aplikacja skanera QR różni się pod dwoma względami:

1. Wymaga jedynie minimalnej liczby uprawnień, a mianowicie:
Większość aplikacji do skanowania kodów QR dostępnych w sklepie Google Play oprócz tych wymaganych uprawnień potrzebuje też kilku innych: np. odczytywania kontaktów lub rejestru połączeń i pobierania danych z Internetu. Większość z tych wymagań nie jest konieczna do funkcjonalności, którą faktycznie mają zapewniać.

2. Wspiera swoich użytkowników w wykrywaniu złośliwych linków: kody QR dostarczają atakującemu nowych możliwości, ponieważ mogą zawierać złośliwe linki, np. linki do stron phishingowych lub stron internetowych, z których automatycznie pobierane jest złośliwe oprogramowanie. Dlatego ważne jest, aby dokładnie sprawdzić link przed wejściem na wskazaną stronę internetową. Ponieważ użytkownikowi trudno jest wykryć złośliwe linki, przyjazna dla prywatności aplikacja skanera QR wspiera użytkownika, podświetlając domenę (np. w przypadku https://www.secuso.org zostanie podświetlona secuso.org). Aby uniknąć niedokładnego sprawdzenia linku, a w szczególności zaznaczonej domeny, aplikacja dostarcza informacji o możliwym oszustwie, a jej użytkownicy muszą potwierdzić, że sprawdzili link i jest on godny zaufania. Uwaga: informacje wyświetlane po zeskanowaniu kodu QR opartego na adresie URL nie są dostosowane do każdego adresu URL, stąd należy traktować to jako poradę dla użytkownika jak się ogólnie zachować.

Przyjazna dla prywatności aplikacja skanera QR obsługuje większość popularnych typów kodów QR. Obsługiwane są także kody kreskowe i inne powszechnie stosowane kody.
